6 killed as vehicle ploughs into group in UP’s Chitrakoot

Six people died and two were seriously injured in this district when a speeding pick-up vehicle crashed into them on Saturday, police said.

Chitrakoot Additional Superintendent of Police Shailendra Rai said the jeep carrying tomatoes ran eight people over at Rauli Kalyanpur village at around 6.30am.

Naresh (35), Arvind (21), Ram Swaroop (25), Chhakka (32) and Som Dutt (25) died on the spot, while Bhanu Pratap (32) succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Bhagwan Dass (45) and Ram Narayan (50) are in a serious condition, the police said.

The Additional Superintendent of Police said the victims, all residents of Jari village in Banda district, had come to Rauli Kalyanpur village to attend a marriage.

The jeep driver was arrested, the police said.

District Magistrate Subhrant Shukla said Rs 2 lakh each had been announced for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolence over the loss of lives, the state government said in a statement.
