New Delhi, September 14

Eight of the 11 Congress MLAs in Goa on Wednesday joined the ruling BJP two months after the party appeared to have addressed a defection crisis.

The MLAs led by former chief minister Digambar Kamat and ex-leader of opposition in Goa assembly Micheal Lobo will not attract disqualification under the Anti-Defection Law as two-thirds of the Congress MLAs have defected.

Lobo while announcing the move at a time when Rahul Gandhi is holding a Bharat Jodo Yatra said, “It is Congress Todo, BJP Jodo”.

The embarrassing setback at a time of the biggest political outreach of the Congress — Bharat Jodo Yatra — raises questions on the grand old party’s ability to unite its own cadres and inspire them.

Veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad while resigning from Congress had urged party president to unite Congress before seeking to unite India.
