As many as 10 Central Trade Unions on Tuesday flayed the Union government for enacting the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and attributed it to its effort to create communal polarisation and divert public focus from issues of governance on which it had allegedly failed.

“The BJP government is creating discrimination to divide the country, which may cause widespread discontent among people irrespective of religion, caste and creeds,” the union said in a joint statement.

The unions are namely INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, LPF, AICCTU and UTUC. “The CAA is also being used to divert the attention from the present crisis and create a divide among the unified protest of the working people against the anti-people policies of the BJP government,” said a national union leader.

The unions said the government passed the Act in Parliament to keep section of people living in India by stripping their right as citizen. “Such discrimination was created to cover up their lapses found in imposition of National Register of Citizenship in Assam,” the unions said. They have also given a call for national protest against the CAA on December 19. — TNS
