Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha and WBPCC chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has praised the Sheikh Hasina-led Bangladesh government for what he called “stern action” against the assailants who unleashed violence against the minority Hindus in the country on Monday.

Chowdhury suggested that India must reciprocate by treating the minorities living in the country well.

“I must appreciate the stern action taken by Bangladesh govt against those miscreants who committed vandalism and arson against Hindu minorities of that country on the pretext of recent occurrences in France”, Chowdhury said in a tweet on Tuesday morning.

“We are all witnessing the unfolding of the golden chapter of our relation with Bangladesh govt since Sheikh Hasina Ji had assumed power”, Chowdhury said in a second tweet.

“We should also extend reciprocal cordial gesture to Bangladesh and also take care upon the minorities in our country in order to further consolidate our relations”, the Congress leader, who is widely respected in West Bengal, said in his third and final tweet on the subject.

Homes of Hindu residents in Bangladesh’s Cumilla city were vandalised and burned by some radical Islamists over rumours of an alleged Facebook post slandering Islam, reports said on Monday. The residences of Hindus were attacked after a Bangladeshi man, who lives in France, allegedly praised President Emmanuel Macron for taking steps against “inhuman ideologies” after a teacher in Paris was beheaded and the recent knife attack incident inside a church in France.

A PTI report from Dhaka said that five people have been arrested in connection with the violence and a mobile court has sentenced each of them to one and half years of imprisonment after identifying the culprits from video footage.
