Assam Killings: India warns against propaganda in Gulf

Videos of a photographer jumping on the body of a person who had died in a police firing in Assam a week back have caused uneasiness in the Gulf countries.

Amid chatter about boycotting Indian goods in the Gulf due to New Delhi’s alleged Islamophobia, the Indian Embassy in Doha tried to push back against the more virulent social media posts.

“There is a malicious attempt on social media to spread hatred and disharmony through false propaganda about India. We urge everyone to exercise caution and not become victims of fake handles, propaganda, doctored videos. All Indian nationals are advised to maintain unity and harmony,” said a tweet by the Indian Embassy in Qatar. A post by Grand Mufti of the Sultanate of Oman has also expressed concern over the “blatant aggression against Muslim citizens” at the hands of extremist groups supported by official bodies.
