Another blow to Opposition, JMM also backs Droupadi Murmu
New Delhi, July 14
The opposition unity over the presidential election was in tatters on Thursday with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Shibu Soren announced support for the ruling NDA nominee Droupadi Murmu in the July 18 election.
In a statement, Soren asked party MPs and MLAs to vote for Murmu.
The statement said, “You are aware that Droupadi Murmu, former Governor of Jharkhand and a tribal, is the candidate in the upcoming presidential election. For the first time after Independence, a tribal woman is going to get the distinction of becoming the president. Therefore, after due deliberation, the party has decided to vote in favour of Murmu in the presidential election,” the JMM chief said.
The JMM broke ranks with the Congress to back Murmu days after the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena ditched the NCP and Congress alliance in Maharashtra to do the same.
