Signs of Covid-19 resurgence surfaced on Thursday as new cases rose to 46,164, the highest since July 1, with Kerala leading the surge.

Around 58.4 per cent of the cases recorded today are from Kerala, which currently is the only Indian state with more than 1 lakh active cases. Out of India’s 3,33,725 active cases, 1,70,829 (51.19 per cent) are from Kerala, followed by 53,695 from Maharashtra, 19,344 from Karnataka and 18,352 from Tamil Nadu.

“Reasons for Kerala’s surge include lack of Covid precautions during Onam festivities, low RTPCR test rate, low contact tracing and lax monitoring of 80 per cent of the infected who are in home isolation. We have urged the state to speed up vaccination,” Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said.
