A group of men gathered near Jamia Millia Islamia University on Tuesday and raised slogans. Carrying national flags, they were heard shouting “Jai Shri Ram” and “Goli maro….”

Hafeez Azmi, a Jamia student protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act said, “The group deliberately stopped at the barricade near Gate No. 1, where the main protest is going on. They were there for more than 10 minutes, chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and shouting ‘Goli maro….’ The police were standing right there.” Some students showed video clips of policemen “walking along with the group” while they raised objectionable slogans. Later, the group dispersed.

Addressing a rally in 24 North Parganas, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee alleged the firing incidents outside Jamia Millia University and Shaheen Bagh were attempts to terrorise peaceful protesters.

In a jibe at PM Narendra Modi, she said unlike the PM, who “calls himself a ‘chowkidar’ (watchman) only during the polls”, she took care of her people round the year.

“I don’t belong to a group that spreads hatred among masses. They (BJP leaders) are saying ‘goli maro’ (shoot them), how can you shoot protesters for holding peaceful agitation? Is this acceptable in a democracy?” the CM asked while addressing a rally.

Backing Shaheen Bagh protesters in Delhi, she said some parties were trying to “spread misinformation” on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. “CAA won’t grant you citizenship, it will make you a foreigner,” she warned. PTI
