New Delhi, September 20
The main opposition BJP in West Bengal said on Monday it would not field a candidate for the October 4 Rajya Sabha bypoll, a development that will pave the way for election of the TMC nominee unopposed.
The TMC had, last week, named Sushmita Dev, who recently joined the party after quitting the Congress, as its candidate for the bypoll.
She filed her nomination today to fill the vacancy in the Rajya Sabha created by the exit of TMC’s Manas Bhunia before the completion of his term to join the Bengal Government as the Water Resources Minister.
“The BJP will not nominate any candidate for Rajya Sabha bypoll due in WB,” Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari tweeted. The Congress has named Rajni Patil as the party’s candidate for the RS bypoll from Maharashtra. — TNS
