Vishal Kumar Jha (21), the student, and the suspect woman allegedly knew each other. A court in Mumbai remanded Jha in police custody till January 10. The police had earlier filed an FIR against unidentified persons following complaints that photographs of Muslim women were uploaded for a fictitious “auction” on an app hosted by GitHub platform.
A team of the Mumbai cyber cell is in Uttarakhand where the woman is being questioned. She will be taken to a court for a transit remand and brought to Mumbai.
Hundreds of Muslim women were listed for “auction” on the app with photographs sourced from their social media accounts. The app appeared to be a clone of “Sulli Deals” which triggered a similar row last year.
Amid outrage, the Delhi Police had also sought details from the GitHub platform about the developer of the app and asked Twitter to block and remove related offensive content on its platform. — TNS
