Change British-era names of roads: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, December 16

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday asked the Director General Defence Estates (DGDE) to consider renaming of roads and buildings in cantonment areas after the brave soldiers and the stalwarts who played a central role in building a modern India.

Speaking at the 96th Raising Day of the DGDE, the minister said, “At present, the names of British officers are being used for roads and bridges in Cantts.” He clarified that the suggestion was neither to tamper with history nor motivated by any malice or narrow mentality. If someone from the British officers has done a commendable job for the betterment of the public, they should be introduced to the next generation, and their names should be kept respectfully.

There are 62 cantonments across the country and all were set up by the British.

Rajnath Singh said the ministry was ready to do policy reforms to sort out issues faced by civilians living in the cantonment areas. — TNS
