CJI Bobde: Leaving with satisfaction
Box: Decided key cases, including Ayodhya
CJI SA Bobde, who demitted office on Friday, dealt with several key matters, including the historic Ayodhya verdict, Right to Privacy, petitions challenging the CAA, Tata-Mistry case, Mahabaleshwar temple issue, appointment of ad hoc judges in high courts and ban on firecrackers.

Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, who demitted office on Friday, said in his farewell speech, “I leave with the satisfaction that I did my best…I hand over the baton to Justice (NV) Ramana who will, I am sure, very ably lead the court.”
At a virtual function, he said he was leaving the Supreme Court with happiness, goodwill and very fond memories and the satisfaction of having done his best.
Justice Bobde was administered oath as the 47th CJI in November 2019. On his last working day, Attorney General KK Venugopal, Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh and senior advocates heaped praise on him for leading the judiciary during the pandemic.
“When the pandemic broke out in March last year, CJI Bobde rose to the occasion and started virtual hearing and almost 50,000 cases have been disposed of. It’s a great achievement,” Venugopal said, adding that the CJI’s tenure should of at least three years.
A votary of use of artificial intelligence in judiciary, Justice Bobde introduced Supreme Court Portal for Assistance in Courts Efficiency for assisting judges with legal research.
