No sooner than US President Donald Trump set his foot on Indian soil today, six Left-leaning organisations staged a protest here against his visit. The CPM asked the Centre to resist US pressure to prise open country’s economy.

“The US today presents the biggest threat to a rule-based trading system and international order. It undermines the security of livelihood and sovereignty of nations like India,” said CPM leaders.

“The US is pursuing Trump’s unilateral agenda. The singular intention of its administration is to boost US corporate interest and Trump’s re-election bid,” they said.

CPI chief D Raja, while addressing protesters, alleged that the present dispensation at the Centre had compromised country’s standard foreign policy to play second fiddle to the US.

“Trump is pressuring India to simultaneously open its market and do away with subsidies to the agriculture sector even when the US gives huge subsidies to its agriculture sector,” said Raja. The protest of the orgainsations is as much against Trump’s visit as against the government going out on its limb to lay red-carpet welcome to Trump. — TNS
