New Delhi, February 17

Former Lok Sabha MP from Amethi and Rae Bareli and a long time Gandhi family loyalist Captain Satish Sharma passed away in Goa tonight after a brief illness. He was 73.

Sharma, who owed his rise in politics to proximity with late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was thrice elected to Lok Sabha. He also served three terms in Rajya Sabha.

Sharma was dropped from Rajya Sabha in 2016 after his term ended.

He represented Amethi after Rajiv Gandhi’s death in 1991.

After 1998, Satish Sharma was shifted to Rae Bareli where he remained MP till 2004 before vacating the seat for Sonia Gandhi.

Sharma quit as an airline pilot and joined politics in 1983 at Rajiv Gandhi’s behest.

His last rites will be performed in Delhi on Friday.
