The 99-year-old was undergoing treatment for age-related and post-Covid ailments at Kerala’s Neyyattinkara.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes for the legendary freedom fighter with Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, BJP chief JP Nadda and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also paying condolences, lauding his rich legacy.

Born in Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram on July 7, 1922, Nair served as chairman of the Kerala Mahatma Gandhi National Memorial Trust, managed by the Union Government.

A recipient of the Padma Shri in 2016, Nair had past association with the Bhoodan and Gramdan movements led by Vinoba Bhave.

Such were his peace credentials, that the Kerala Government in 2002 urged him to mediate following the Marad massacre at the time, when AK Antony was the Chief Minister of the state.
