3.28 crore availed free hospitalisation under Ayushman scheme: PM on World Health Day
New Delhi, April 7
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that 3.28 crore poor and vulnerable Indians had availed the free hospitalisation cover under the landmark Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojna, one of the two pillars of the Ayushman Bharat Scheme.
Greeting citizens on the occasion of World Health Day, the PM said more than 18 crore Ayushman cards had been issued to the beneficiaries in the poor and vulnerable households listed under the socio economic caste census.

“So far more than 3.28 crore people have availed free treatment under Ayushman Bharat PMJAY scheme. Some of the scheme beneficiaries are those who would avoid visiting a hospital earlier, and would silently endure the pain and suffering because of the inability to pay for hospital treatment. Ayushman Bharat has rid the lives of the poor of a huge anxiety,’ the PM said, wishing everyone good health and wellness.
He said World Health Day was a day to express gratitude to all those associated with the health sector.
“It is their hard work that has kept our planet protected,” the PM noted.
He added that in the last eight years, the medical education sector had undergone rapid transformations.

“Several new medical colleges have come up. Our Government’s efforts to enable study of medicine in local languages will give wings to the aspirations of countless youngsters. I feel very happy when I interact with beneficiaries of schemes such as PM Jan Aushadhi. Our focus on affordable health care has ensured significant savings for the poor and middle class. At the same time, we are strengthening our Ayush centres,” the PM said.

He added that Ayushman Bharat has had a positive impact on several lives and transformed our health sector, with 10.74 crore families entitled to Rs 5 lakh annual free hospital care for the listed treatments.

The PM also shared that so far 1.17 lakh health and wellness centres under Ayushman Bharat scheme had been set up close to the villages and 1.03 crore wellness sessions had been organised.
He also mentioned that the PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission was the next step forward with Rs 64,180 crore allocated for the same to create critical care blocks and surveillance facilities in each of India’s over 730 districts.
