Heavy rain throws life out of gear in West Bengal

Low-lying areas of Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Coochbehar districts in West Bengal have been inundated following incessant rainfall over the past few days, officials said on Saturday. Bhasusubba and Champadanga in Mal Block and areas such as Dhupguri, Moinaguri and Sukanta Nagar in Jalpaiguri are reeling under a flood-like situation.

Meanwhile, water is being released from Teesta river’s Gajoldoba barrage every hour due to heavy rainfall in Bhutan and Dooars region. The barrage released 1802.82 cumec water at 1 pm on Saturday, said Tanai Talukdar, Assistant Engineer, Irrigation, Jalpaiguri.

The Jalpaiguri administration and the town’s municipality have started distributing relief materials to the affected people of the low-lying areas.

Saikat Chatterjee, Vice Chairman, Jalpaiguri Municipality, said relief materials such as rice, dal, biscuits, drinking water and medicines had been distributed among affected people. In Alipuarduar town, water from Kaljani and Sankosh rivers entered houses, forcing people to flee to safe places.
