The Meghalaya High Court has ordered status quo to be maintained as of today at Shillong’s Harijan Colony and directed that both Harijan Panchayat Committee and high-level committee of the state to respect it.

Petitioner Harijan Panchayat Committee’s counsel R Khatri contended the Meghalaya Government constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Deputy CM on June 4, 2018, for examining all relevant records and documents relating to relocation of the colony from Mawlonghat.

The court observed the main contention of the petitioner was that the panchayat committee diverted from its purpose and took decisions in pursuant of which petitioners were being evicted from their houses. The next hearing in the case is on May 25. — TNS
