Horticulture production hits record high at 331.05 million tonnes: Agriculture Minister

According to the third advance estimates, India will produce a record 331.05 million tonnes of horticulture production in 2020-21. Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar attributed it to “farmer-friendly policies of the government, tireless hard work of farmers and research of scientists, horticulture production”

“Area and production of various horticultural crops in 2020-21 is estimated to be a record 331.05 MT,an increase of 10.6 MT (3.3%) over 2019-20,” Tomar said

Fruits are estimated to be 103.0 MT, compared to 102.1 MT achieved in 2019-20 and vegetables 197.2 MT compared to last year’s 188.3 MT, an increase of 4.8%, according to the government data

Onion is reported to be 26.8 MT as against 26.1 MT in 2019-20 and potato 54.2 MT, an increase by 5.6 MT compared to 2019-20. Tomato, meanwhile, is reported to be 21.1 MT against 20.6 MT in 2019-20.

An increase of 6.2%, from 0.73 MT in 2019-20 to 0.78 MT in 2020-21, has been registered in aromatic and medicinal crops. Plantation crops too increased from 16.1 MT in 2019-20 to 16.6 MT in 2020-21 and spices increased by 5.3%, from 10.1 MT in 2019-20 to 10.7 MT in 2020-21.
