India saw 80 murders daily last year: NCRB report

The latest report of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) has revealed that the country recorded an average of 80 murders and 77 rape cases daily in 2020, while Delhi saw the most cases of crimes against women.

Among metros, most rape cases in Delhi

  • Delhi accounted for nearly 40% of all rape cases and 25% murder cases among 19 metropolitan cities in 2020
  • Delhi reported 967 rape cases, followed by Jaipur (409), Mumbai (322) and Bengaluru (108)

The data showed Uttar Pradesh reporting the maximum of the total 29,193 fatalities in murder cases, which is marginally 1 per cent higher than 28,915 murders in 2019, with a daily average of 79 killings that year.

As per the data, UP reported 3,779 murder cases, followed by Bihar (3,150), Maharashtra (2,163), Madhya Pradesh (2,101) and West Bengal (1,948). The national capital Delhi reported 472 murder cases.

In cases of crime against women, the NCRB data revealed that 77 rape cases were reported daily across India, with the total of 28,046 such ghastly incidents last year.

However, the overall figure of 3,71,503 crimes against women showed a decline of 8.3 per cent as 4,05,326 cases were registered in 2019.

As per the data, Rajasthan reported the highest number of rape cases (5,310), followed by UP (2,769), Madhya Pradesh (2,339) and Maharashtra (2,061).

Among the 19 metropolitan cities, Delhi reported the highest number of crimes against women (9,782), followed by Mumbai (4,583), Bengaluru (2,730) and Lucknow (2,636).

Among the four major metropolitan cities, Delhi registered the least number of cybercrime cases at 166, according to the NCRB data. However, cybercrimes in the national capital saw an increase in 2020 as compared to 2019 when it registered 107 such cases.

Among the four major metro cities, Mumbai registered 2,433 cases, Chennai registered 186 cases, and Kolkata registered 172 cases, the data showed.
