Private domestic air carrier IndiGo today launched a scheme that allows a passenger to book two seats to ensure additional safety amid the Covid pandemic.

In an official statement, the airlines said the charges for the extra seat “will be up to 25 per cent of the original booking cost” and it would come into effect into effect from July 24.

“The 6E double seat scheme will not be available through travel portals, call centres or airport counters. It can only be availed on the IndiGo website,” the low-cost carrier said.

Noting that lack of social distancing was a major concern among flyers, Sanjay Kumar, chief strategy and revenue officer of the airlines, said, “Even though air travel is the safest mode of travel at this point, we understand customers’ emotional need for safety. We have been receiving such requests and are happy to introduce the option to book two seats for a single passenger to ensure additional safety.”
