New Delhi, June 15

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce has asked the government to review the Indo-Nepal Treaty (1950) and incorporate stringent requirements for certificate of origin on tea imports from Nepal to prevent influx of inferior quality tea into India from across the border.

The committee headed by V Vijayasai Reddy presented its 171st report on subject “Issues Affecting the Indian Tea Industry especially in Darjeeling region” to RS Chairman Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday.

The panel noted that the unhampered and easy influx of substandard tea from neighbouring countries, especially Nepal, was jeopardising the tea industry of India.
