A Water Sports and Adventure Institute (WSAI) has been established by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at Tehri Dam in Uttarakhand. The institute was inaugurated on Friday by Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.

ITBP's Mountaineering and Skiing Institute at Auli, will independently run this institution, which will impart training in aero, water and land-related sports and adventure activities.

Training in kayaking, rowing, canoeing, water skiing, para-gliding, para-sailing, scuba diving, paddle boating, speed boating, kite surfing, jet skiing, etc, will also be provided at this institute.

Apart from this, water rescue and life saving courses will be conducted here. It has been targeted to train at least 200 youth in water sports at this institution every year.

Currently, three ITBP teams - kayaking, canoeing and rowing - have been deployed here, in which around 59 sportspersons are available. Also, there will be other ITBP administrative and supporting staff, and approximately 100 ITBP personnel will always remain at the centre.

Speaking on the occasion, Rawat said that this institution will boost national and international tourism and it will increase opportunity of employment for the people of the state. He also appreciated the contribution of ITBP to nation building.

Rijiju said that the Sports Ministry looks forward to support more such endeavours in future in the field of adventure sports in the country.
