New Delhi, June 16

Former minister Jairam Ramesh was on Thursday appointed the new AICC general secretary incharge of communication, publicity and media, including social and digital media, with immediate effect.

Randeep Singh Surjewala was relieved of the charge he had been handling for many years now.

Surjewala will, however, continue as Congress general secretary, Karnataka.

Jairam, 68, was widely anticipated to take over as Congress media chief and has been guiding communication strategy from behind the scene.

The 68-year-old former minister who handled environment ministry in the Congress-led UPA is also chief whip of the party in Rajya Sabha and was re-elected to the Upper House from Karnataka in the just concluded biennial elections.
