Jamia firing: Shah directs Delhi police chief to take strictest action
New Delhi, January 30
Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday directed Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take the strictest action in the case of a man firing a pistol at protesters near the Jamia Millia Islamia University.
The home minister also said the Central government will not tolerate such incidents and the guilty will not be spared.
“I have spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner on the incident of firing in Delhi and have directed him to take strictest action,” he said in a tweet.
Shah said there will be serious action into the incident.
Tension spiralled in Jamia Nagar after a man fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters, injuring a Jamia Millia Islamia student before walking away while waving the firearm above his head and shouting “Yeh lo aazadi” amid heavy police presence in the area.
Left slams ‘hate’ speeches
The firing at Jamia Nagar on a group of anti-CAA protesters is fallout of “hate” speeches and inflammatory comments made by Union ministers and BJP leaders during campaigning for the February 8 Delhi assembly polls, Left parties alleged.
“The hate-speech and call to violence by Union ministers and BJP leaders – along with the silence of the PM – has led to this shameful outcome. This is the kind of India this govt wants to create. #MartyrsDay,” CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury tweeted.
CPI general secretary D Raja said the incident is a “direct result” of the inflammatory comments made by BJP leaders.
It is unfortunate that such an incident has taken place on the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, he told PTI.
Kejriwal’s appeal to Shah
Reacting to the Jamia firing incident, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asked Home Minister Amit Shah to take care of the “deteriorating” law and order situation in Delhi.
Kejriwal’s statement came through a tweet replying to a post by Shah in which the home minister said he has directed Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take strict action in the case.
“What is happening in Delhi? The law and order is deteriorating. Please take care of Delhi’s law and order,” Kejriwal said in the tweet.
‘Democracy to mobocracy’: Mehbooba
Srinagar: The shooting incident at Jamia Millia Islamia University seems to have completed India’s transition from democracy to mobocracy, a tweet on PDP president Mehbooba Mufti’s Twitter handle said on Thursday.
“As we remember Gandhiji on the sombre occasion of his death anniversary, India’s transition from democracy to a mobocracy seems complete,” a tweet on Mehbooba’s Twitter handle read.
Mehbooba’s daughter Iltija Mufti has been operating her mother’s Twitter handle since August 5 last year following detention of the former chief minister in the wake of abrogation of article 370 provisions.
“Interesting that certain media channels are referring to culprit named Gopal as ‘shooter’. He’d be a certified terrorist only if his name was Ghazi or Ghazanfar,” another tweet on the handle read, questioning the description of the shooter in certain TV news channels. PTI
