New Delhi, June 13
Amid reports of demolition of illegal buildings of those involved in violent protests over the alleged blasphemous comments by BJP’s suspended spokesperson Nupur Sharma, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking directions to restrain the UP government from demolishing properties in Kanpur without following due process of law.
The prominent Muslim outfit sought directions to ensure that demolition exercise of any nature was carried out strictly in accordance with applicable laws and only after due notice and hearing given to affected persons.
It demanded action against the officials responsible for the houses demolished, contending the demolitions were in violation of the rule of law and the municipal laws of Uttar Pradesh.
Kanpur witnessed violence after Friday prayers on June 3 over after some people attempted to shut shops in protest against alleged derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammed by Sharma during a TV debate late last month.
For the second consecutive Friday, several parts of the country – including Hathras, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Moradabad, Ferozabad, and Ambedkarnagar – witnessed violent protests.
