Leaders of banned PFI, CFI arrested in Assam

Three leaders of the proscribed Popular Front of India (PFI) and Campus Front of India (CFI) were arrested by the Assam police at the Barpeta Road Railway station, Superintendent of Police Amitabh Sinha told the media here on Saturday. The trio were arrested on Thursday night when they arrived by train from Delhi.
The CFI leader was identified as national treasurer Jahidul Islam while the PFI leaders are its Assam secretary Jakir Hussain and state president Abu Sama, Sinha said. The police seized Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and several documents from them.
Sinha said that the trio had fled the state after the outfits were banned in September last year and were continuing their activities from outside Assam. The police were on their trail for long. Islam and Hussain were residents of Baksa district while Sama hailed from Barpeta.
The PFI shot into prominence during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019. Some of its activists were arrested during the stir.
The CFI is the student wing of the PFI.
