New Delhi, March 12
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided to give “Y+” category VIP security to Bollywood star of yesteryear Mithun Chakraborty, who recently joined the BJP ranks, as West Bengal is in the midst of a high voltage electoral battle.
Officials in the MHA said the security cover would be provided by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which has a dedicated wing for this task, called the special security group (SSG).
“Chakraborty has been given a ‘Y+’ security cover and armed CISF commandos will accompany him during the poll campaign in West Bengal,” a senior official said.
The officials said a recent threat perception report by central security agencies had recommended the MHA for a protection cover to the national award-winning actor.
Also known as the Disco-king of Bollywood, Chakraborty had joined the BJP at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mega rally at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata last Sunday.
Earlier in February the MHA had given “X”’ and “Y” level VIP security cover to a dozen state leaders for their movement within West Bengal during elections.
Election to the 294-member West Bengal assembly will be held in eight phases between March 27 and April 29.
Meanwhile, BJP MP from Godda, Jharkhand Nishikant Dubey would also be given a similar security cover that involves about 4-5 armed commandos protecting the person.
With these new inductions, the CISF will now have under its protection a total of 104 VIPs, including RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.
