New Delhi, August 4

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sent a recommendation to the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) to initiate disciplinary action against former CBI Director Alok Verma for allegedly misusing his official position and violating the relevant service rules.

The CBI comes under administrative control of the DoPT. “The disciplinary proceedings may lead to temporary or permanent forfeiture of Verma’s retirement benefits,” a senior official said.

During his tenure, Verma had a bitter spat with his deputy Rakesh Asthana, who has now been made Commissioner, Delhi Police.

The DoPT has forwarded the recommendation to the UPSC, the recruitment body for IPS officers, the officials said, adding that rules provide that the commission needs to be consulted before imposing penalty on IPS officers.
