Modern education not equipped to build character: CJI

Describing modern education as utilitarian in nature, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Monday said it might not help to build students’ character or nurture moral values in them.

“Modern education focuses on a utilitarian system of education and it is not fit to build the character of students and develop the moral values of students. True education develops patience, mutual understanding and mutual respect. Hold onto the educational journey to develop the true core of human values,” CJI Ramana said addressing the 40th convocation of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh.

True learning should involve a holistic development of the individual, including development of ethical and moral values, Justice Ramana said, lauding the university which came into existence due to the “unwavering love Satya Sai Baba had for children”.

“This university is built around the concept of modern gurukulam. Learning is most contemporary. Essence of Indian culture and values are also imbibed. I am glad to learn that this university is planning a new research and development sector,” the CJI said. His speech was made available to the media here.
