New Delhi, July 11
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today unveiled the national emblem cast on the roof of the new Parliament building ahead of the project’s anticipated completion by November and told workers they were “making history, not a building”.
Oppn cries foul
- The Left and the AIMIM said the PM “violated the Constitution” by unveiling the national emblem
- The CPM noted the Constitution separated the three wings of the democracy
The PM also urged the construction staff to ensure that every poor person in the country should feel the Indian Parliament was his own humble tenement.
“You should be proud of yourselves because you are not merely making a building, you are making history. You are not dealing merely in brick and mortar. You are working to enhance national pride. Your hard work will bear fruit,” the PM told the workers with whom he interacted after performing the religious rites at the site and unveiling the national emblem.
The bronze emblem weighs 9,500 kg and is 6.5 m high. Government sources say it has been cast at the top of the central foyer of the new Parliament building.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, present on the occasion, said the new building would “most likely be completed in time by October-November 2022 and the winter session would hopefully be held in the new building”.
