New Delhi, December 1

The Indian Navy on Monday test-fired a BrahMos missile from a warship hitting a target at sea with pinpoint accuracy, making it the fourth such launch of the missile in the past one week.

The previous launches were done by the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF). The Army twice tested the land launched version intended to hit a target on land on November 24 and November 25. The IAF had carried out a launch of the same version on November 25. Earlier in October, the IAF had test-fired a sleeker version of missile from a Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet.

The air launched version is not yet inducted into the forces while versions, of the 290-km range missile, launched from land and warships have been inducted.

“All launches have precisely hit the targets. Never in the history such feat has been accomplished by any other weapon system and we are proud that we are able to complement our armed forces with the best missile system in the world which has no competition in its class,” Parveen Pathak, a spokesperson for the BrahMos, said.

BrahMos Aerospace, an India-Russia joint venture, produces the supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or from land platforms. Missiles like the BrahMos can conceivably be used for pinpoint strikes at economic and strategic assets of the enemy or command-and-control centres and other high-value targets like surface ships or aircraft carriers on the high seas from long stand-off distances.
