The committee constituted by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to probe into large-scale violence in West Bengal post recent Assembly elections reached the state on Thursday.

The seven-member committee headed by NHRC member Rajeev Jain will make field visits to various places of violence to probe into the complaints, including Cooch Behar.

They will meet the victims and officials of the state. The committee was constituted on the SC orders. The members include functionaries of the NHRC, National Commission for Minorities and National Commission for Women.

The apex court had rejected the state government’s plea to rescind the order to constitute the committee. The committee will submit the probe report to the court for necessary action. There have been more than 1,000 complaints of violence “unleashed by TMC workers on political opponents” in the recent Assembly elections.
