New Delhi, July 2

A Jaipur court on Saturday sent the four accused in the murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli to 10-day custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Riaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad were arrested by the Rajasthan Police on Tuesday, hours after they allegedly hacked the tailor to death with a cleaver at his shop for supporting former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and posted videos online saying they avenged an insult to Islam.

The two others, Mohsin and Asif, were nabbed on Thursday night for their involvement in the conspiracy of the crime.

A group of lawyers attacked the four accused, kicking and slapping them and hurling abuses as they were being taken to a prisoner vehicle after being produced in a court. The clothes of one of the four accused were also torn, and the agitated lawyers demanded capital punishment for them. Officials said all four accused were produced before the NIA court in Jaipur amid tight security. “The court ordered police remand till July 12,” they said.

The officials said all four would be interrogated at the NIA’s Jaipur office and would not be brought to Delhi. The NIA took over the investigation of the brutal murder on Wednesday.

Cong, BJP spar over accused’s ‘affiliation’

New Delhi: The Congress and the BJP on Saturday sparred over the affiliation of Riaz Attari, prime accused in the murder of Udaipur tailor, with the Congress alleging he had saffron links. Levelling the charge, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said, “The killer of Kanhaiya Lal, Riyaz Attari, is a member of the BJP,” alleged Khera. BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya termed Khera’s claims as “fake news”. “The Udaipur murderers weren’t members of the BJP. Their attempt to infiltrate was like the LTTE assassin’s attempt to enter the Congress to kill Rajiv Gandhi,” he tweeted. TNS
