New Delhi, December 8
Delhi gurdwara management body — DSGMC — has decided to open special shops, named ‘1984 Stores’, to rehabilitate families affected by the anti-Sikh riots 35 years ago. The stores will be opened at 10 historic gurdwaras in Delhi and employ family members of the riot victims, according to DSGMC president Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
“These stores will be operated and administered on the co-operative model by the 1984 violence survivors and affected families. The profit earned from the stores will be utilised for their dignified livelihood,” he said.
The first store, a one-stop shop, will be opened at Bangla Sahib Gurdwara by the end of December. The next will be opened at Rakabganj Sahib in January 2020.
Besides groceries and stationery, the stores will also sell articles of Sikh faith and religious literature.
Household items prepared by the riot survivors, such as snacks, spices, papad, fruit jelly, pickle and handicraft, will also be sold at these stores. PTI
