Pakistan PM Imran Khan on Monday announced that Islamabad would allow the transit of 50,000 tonnes of wheat offered by India to Afghanistan. This was among the several announcements by Khan after visiting the newly established Afghanistan Inter-Ministerial Coordination Cell.

Pakistan will also facilitate the return of Afghan patients stuck in India and immediately ship humanitarian assistance worth Rs 5 billion, including 50,000 tonnes of wheat and winter shelters.

The announcement may not mean that Indian aid will start transiting through Pakistan territory immediately.

The Pakistani authorities have yet to convey whether Indian trucks will be allowed to travel to Afghanistan or whether they will insist on the more cumbersome process of unloading the wheat and loading it on Pakistani or Afghan goods carriers. — TNS
