Noting that plurality sustains democracy, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana has said education should nurture diversity in a globalised world and foster critical thinking among students.

Speaking at the 82nd convocation of Osmania University, Hyderabad, last evening, the CJI said the ultimate purpose of education was fostering critical thinking among students. “True education is what nurtures true impulses and independent thinking. Instead of being prisoners of the status quo, we need youth to dive deep and bring transformation from within. You cannot change the world with mere high principles and morals. You need to act,” said the CJI, conferred Honoris Causa doctorate by Osmania University.

“Another aspect that is key to the sustenance of our democracy is honouring our plurality. Instead of fostering the feeling of “othering”, our education should lead us where we can nurture diversity,” the CJI noted.

All institutions should introduce a subject on the basic ideas about the Constitution and governance, irrespective of the stream of learning, he said. “The ideas of the Constitution need to be simplified for everyone,”
