New Delhi, September 11

On the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 US terror attacks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined the importance of humanism as advocated by Swami Vivekananda and said such tragedies could be permanently solved through humanitarian values.

Invokes Vivekananda

A century ago, on September 11, 1893, Swami Vivekananda addressed the World Parliament of Religions and introduced the world to the human values of India. Today, the world is realising that tragedies like 9/11 will have a permanent solution only through humanitarian values. — Narendra Modi, PM

“September 11 is the date etched in world history for a brutal assault on humanity. It is also a day that taught the world a lot. A century ago, on September 11, 1893, Swami Vivekananda addressed the World Parliament of Religions and introduced the world to the human values of India. Today, the world is realising that tragedies like 9/11 will have a permanent solution only through these humanitarian values,” the PM said.

He was speaking at a virtual event to dedicate Sardardham Bhavan in Ahmedabad to people. He also laid the foundation stone for a girls’ hostel. Sardardham Bhavan is an organisation established through joint efforts of several Patidar organisations of Gujarat for the advancement of the underprivileged.

The PM hailed the legacy of Tamil poet Subramania Bharti, whose 100th death anniversary is observed today. Announcing the establishment of Subramania Bharti Chair on Tamil Studies at the Faculty of Arts of Banaras Hindu University, the PM said, “Subramania Bharti was a great scholar, philosopher and freedom fighter. The ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ vision of Sardar Patel is mirrored beautifully in the Tamil writings of Bharati, who drew inspiration from Swami Vivekananda and was influenced by Sri Aurobindo,” said the PM.

He noted that the Indian economy was recovering more quickly than it had receded due to the pandemic and said the government was working towards bringing forward all sections of society that were left behind in the course of development.

“Work is being done for the Dalits and the socially backward sections. Ten per cent reservation has been given to the economically backward,” the PM noted, adding India needed to think like a world leader.
