Noting that it deplores the government’s “keen” intent to have “total control over the media”, the Press Club of India (PCI) today said action against the Press Trust of India (PTI) gives an impression that ruling establishment is “working

for the dismemberment” of India’s premier news agency, which has established a name for itself for being a professional news establishment.

PCI president Anand K Shahay and secretary general Anant Bagaitkar have issued a statement, claiming that “a demolition exercise has been undertaken through its proxy, Prasar Bharati”. “In the matter that has given the government an excuse to move against the PTI, the latter behaved like a professional news platform in interviewing China’s ambassador in Delhi, which yielded valuable information,” it said. — TNS
