NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu on Thursday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will be the first proposer tomorrow when she files her nomination papers for the July 18 election. She also met Home Minister Amit Shah.

Arriving to a rousing welcome at the Delhi Airport, 64-year-old Murmu was received by Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda and scores of BJP workers. Sources said PM Modi would be the first proposer when she files the nomination tomorrow.

The BJD has also formally decided to support her . BJD president and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said he had deputed two ministers to attend Murmu’s nomination filing process. “BJP president JP Nadda spoke to me about the filing of nomination of Droupadi Murmu...My Cabinet colleagues Jagannath Saraka and Tukuni Sahu will sign the nomination papers today and attend the event tomorrow,” Patnaik tweeted with the hashtag #OdishaLeads.
The ruling BJP-backed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance is expected to back Murmu along with five Congress MLAs suspended for supporting the MDA. Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma said he had spoken to most leaders of the alliance already.
Growing support for Murmu has already ensured that the NDA nominee will cross the halfway mark in the electoral college for the presidential election which consists of 10,86,431 votes.
Murmu, who hails from Mayurbhanj, was earlier a two-term MLA in the Odisha Assembly and a Minister of State in Patnaik-led government. Under the rules, a set of 50 proposers and 50 seconders are required to be submitted with the presidential nomination. The BJP is also reaching out to the YSRCP which is likely send its leaders for the event.
Nadda is personally leading the nomination and campaign strategy process for Murmu, who met Modi today.
The joint Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, meanwhile, began his campaign planning. Meanwhile, RSS affiliate Akhil Bhartiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, which works for tribal welfare, urged all parties to elect Murmu unanimously.
