Puri opens extended stretch of Bengaluru Metro network

Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri today inaugurated the 7.5-km-long Western Extension Metro Line under Phase-II of Bengaluru Metro (“Namma Metro”) from the Mysore road to the Kengeri Metro station in the southern metropolis.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai was also present at the function.

The stretch inaugurated today is an elevated Metro at the western end of the currently operational 18.1 km purple green (East-West) line. It has six stations beyond the Mysore road metro station on the operational line.

The new stations are Nayandanahalli, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Jnanabharathi, Pattanagere, Kengeri Bus Terminal and Kengeri Metro station.

Every station is equipped with LED lights, eight escalators and four elevators. Roof-top solar plants will be installed by March 2022.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) estimates that 75,000 people would travel on the line every day. According to officials, to build the line, the BMRCL has spent Rs 1,560 crore for infrastructure and Rs 360 crore for land acquisition.

Puri said: “Bengaluru is one of the major engines of economic growth for the entire country, with strong presence in information technology, biotechnology and applied sciences research. The inauguration of the Western Extension Metro Line is a step towards enabling faster commute and smart mobility options in the city.”

Bommai said that with the support and guidance of the Centre, the state would overcome challenges in building new urban centres.
