New Delhi, September 16
The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed as a “last chance” to the Telangana Government to permit immersion of Lord Ganesh idols made of plaster of Paris in Hussain Sagar Lake, Hyderabad.
Describing it as a recurrent problem in Hyderabad, a Bench led by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana said despite several directions, the state government failed to comply with the orders of the Telangana High Court against the immersion of idols.
The order came on the Telangana Government’s petition challenging the state High Court’s September 13 order refusing to modify its order banning immersion of Ganesha idols made of plaster of Paris in Hussain Sagar Lake and other water bodies in the city.
On behalf of the Telangana Government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted that steps had been taken to check pollution in the lake. He said idols were lifted by cranes after the immersion and transferred to solid waste disposal sites.
