The Supreme Court on Monday took a strong note of the damage to public property and rioting during the students’ stir against the amended Citizenship Act.

A Bench headed by CJI SA Bobde said the court won’t be bullied, and can’t be held to ransom while public properties are destroyed.

Justice Bobde said just because the protesters are students, they can’t take the law in their hands.

The top court made it clear that it would hear the pleas which have alleged police atrocities on students holding protests against the amended Citizenship Act at the Aligarh Muslim University and the Jamial Millia Islamia University here on Tuesday if there are no violent protests.

The CJI said it had to be decided when things cool down.

“This is not the frame of mind when we can decide anything. Let the rioting stop,” said CJI Bobde.

Earlier senior advocate Indira Jaising mentioned the matter before the court, urging it to take suo motu cognisance of the use of excessive force by Delhi police against the student protesters.

It also agreed to take up petitions challenging the validity of Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 after mentioned senior advocates AM Singhvi and Kapil Sibal mentioned the matter.
