Sikkim CM roots for carpooling in Gangtok

Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has suggested several measures to address traffic woes in state capital Gangtok, including one-way routes, carpooling for officials during the peak tourist season and relocating some taxi stands outside the town. He also proposed creating tourist entry permit systems in the districts and the sub-divisions to check influx in the town, thereby decreasing the congestion on the roads. Chairing a meeting with his ministerial colleagues and senior officials here on Saturday, Tamang suggested constituting a committee to resolve the traffic congestion crisis in Gangtok. PTI

UP to adopt ‘one road, one tree’ concept

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Government has decided to follow the principle of ‘one road, one tree’ concept which will not only beautify the area when trees are in bloom but will also serve as a road map for the people. Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Prabhakar Dubey said the one-road, one-tree concept has been used in several cities where trees of one flowering species have been planted on one highway or street. The foliage or the bloom helps people in identifying the area. IANS

12-year-old boy solemnises ‘nikaah’

Lucknow: Twelve-year-old Abdul Haii Rashid Firangi Mahali created a record of sorts on Saturday when he became, probably, the youngest person to solemnise a ‘nikaah’ in Lucknow. Abdul Haii Rashid is the son of Sunni cleric Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali, who was invited to solemnise a ‘nikaah’ in Lucknow. The Maulana took his son along with him and when the marriage was to be solemnized, he asked his son to start the proceedings. Abdul left everyone speechless when he conducted the ceremonies with perfection. Abdul is a student of Class 5 in the prestigious La Martiniere for Boys and wants to become a doctor when he grows up.
