Lucknow, January 10
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday organised a special screening of Meghna Gulzar’s Deepika Padukone starrer “Chhapaak” for party workers at a city multiplex which had been booked by the party. Akhilesh’s decision was meant to show support for Padukone, currently being attacked by the BJP.
However, Yadav has an enviable track record of supporting acid attack survivors during his tenure as the chief minister (2012-2017).
During a visit to Agra when he was the CM he had visited the cafe Sheroes Hangout — India’s first cafe run exclusively by acid-attack survivors. The cafe was a significant step in acid attack survivors’ reintegration in society.
He was so impressed by the endeavour that he provided a well-appointed place across Mayawati’s Ambedkar Park in Gomti Nagar to open Lucknow branch of Sheroes Hangout similarly run completely by acid attack survivors.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor also backed his party colleagues offering free-of-cost movie tickets of “Chhapaak”, saying it was their gesture to support the actress for showing her solidarity with JNU students. — TNS
