The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its order on a number of pleas seeking protection for the victim’s family and shifting of trial to Delhi in the Hathras rape case. A three-judge Bench, headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, also reserved its verdict as to which court should monitor the investigation — the Supreme Court or the Allahabad High Court.

The Uttar Pradesh Government has already recommended a CBI probe into the case even as it denied that the 19-year-old Dalit woman was raped by four men in Hathras on September 14. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that a three-fold protection mechanism was in place for the victim’s family and witnesses.
