The Delhi Directorate of Education’s “invite” making it “compulsory” for government schoolteachers to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Arvind Kejriwal and his Cabinet at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday has triggered a row.

While AAP said the educators were the architect of Delhi’s transformation, the BJP termed it “dictatorial”. The DoE circular says school heads are “invited” to the ceremony with 20 other officials.

Newly elected BJP MLA Vijender Gupta wrote to Kejriwal asking him to roll back the order. Gupta, leader of Opposition in the previous Assembly, said: “By virtue of the order, 15,000 teachers and officials will have to attend the oath ceremony.” On Gupta’s objection, Delhi Dialogue and Development Commission vice-chairman Jasmine Shah said teachers were “architects” of Delhi’s transformation and they “deserved to be invited”. — Agencies
