To avoid 'unhealthy competition', CBSE does away with merit lists

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which announced the results of Classes X and XII today, has decided not to declare the merit lists to eliminate “unhealthy competition”.

Board’s Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj said the board would also not assign first, second and third divisions. It would, however, issue merit certificates to 0.1 per cent students who scored the highest marks in subjects, he said.

The CBSE did not announce merit lists in 2020 and 2021 as the results were declared on the basis of alternative assessment as exams could not be conducted due to the pandemic. For the first time, the CBSE has announced the results of Class X and XII together. The overall pass percentage of Class X is 94.4, lower than last year’s 99.04. As always, girls outperformed boys, this time by a margin of 1.41 per cent.

Region-wise, the highest pass percentage was of Trivandrum (99.68 per cent), followed by Bengaluru (99.22 per cent) and Chennai (98.97 per cent). With a pass percentage of 96.33, Panchkula landed at number 8 and with 95.38, Chandigarh was at number 10 in the top 10.

As far as Class XII is concerned, 92.71 per cent passed, with girls outshining boys by 3.29 per cent. The overall pass percentage dropped from 99.37 in 2021 but it was higher than 83.4 per cent in 2019 and 88.78 per cent in 2020.

Trivandrum topped with a pass percentage of 98.83 per cent followed by Bengaluru and Chennai with 98.16 and 97.79, respectively. Chandigarh was at the seventh spot with 95.98 per cent and Panchkula at the eighth spot with 94.08 per cent.

The board exams will be held from February 15 in 2023. From 2023, there will be one board exam every year.

“In the light of lessening of the impact of the Covid pandemic across the globe, the board has decided to conduct the 2023 examination from February 15, 2023,” the CBSE stated.

PM Narendra Modi congratulated students who passed and said those not happy with the results should know that one exam would never define who they are.
