Twitter reassigned its India head Manish Maheshwari to the US on a day when former Congress president Rahul Gandhi accused the platform of bias, saying it was “interfering with the political process and attacking democracy” by locking party accounts, including his own.

“By shutting down my Twitter account, they are interfering in our political process. A company is making its business to define our politics,” Gandhi said.

Gandhi’s Twitter account was locked on August 6 after he posted pictures of the parents of a minor victim of alleged rape and murder in Delhi. Twitter has said it followed rules and the accounts in question (Congress has claimed 5,000 handles of leaders and workers stand locked) will remain suspended till holders delete the unlawful tweets.

Maheshwari earlier found himself in the crosshairs of the government and was summoned by the Uttar Pradesh Police over tweets of a Muslim man being assaulted in Ghaziabad.

Meanwhile, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairman Priyank Kanoongo today sent notices to Facebook and Instagram flagging Gandhi’s posts revealing the identity of the minor victim’s parents and sought action as per the Juvenile Justice Act. — TNS
