US magazine honours Rajasthan activist for opposing child marriages

Rajasthan’s rehabilitation psychologist Dr Kriti Bharti, who has been fighting against child marriages, has been chosen among world’s top 10 activists by the TAFFD magazine of the US for her outstanding contribution to the social and emotional category.

Kriti has been honoured and recogined for her tireless efforts towards supporting human rights, and annulment and prevention of child marriages, an official communication said.

TAFFD magazine founder and president Osinakachi Akuma Kalu has congratulated Kriti, who is also running the Saarthi Trust.

After the enactment of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, the first annulment of a child marriage was done with the efforts of Kriti. Even after facing threats and obstacles, Kriti has managed to get around 40 child marriages annulled till date. Apart from it, she has prevented thousands of child marriages. She has been included in the list of ‘100 inspirational women’ of the BBC as well as awarded with the International Changemaker Award by a London-based organisation, Girls not Brides. She has also been honoured by the state government.
